The City of Johnsonville has a rich and interesting heritage dating back to the early 1800's. We've included some of the highlights below, as well as a link to learn more about the founding of Johnsonville.

General Francis Marion is said to have traveled thru and crossed the land of what is today present day Johnsonville during the battles of the Revolutionary War. He crossed these areas several times between August of 1780 and January 1781. Today these land areas are known as Witherspoon’s and Ports Ferry. A new found interest has sparked a committee to study and retrace the steps Francis Marion may have taken in our area. The committee, which is chaired by City Attorney Ben Ziegler, is called the Francis Marion Trails Commission. Recently several artifacts have been recovered in Ports Ferry including British Brown Muskets, buttons from the colonial period, horseshoes, and buckles. The seven member trail commission was founded in 2005.

Blacksmithing

The Johnsonville area is home to one of the largest blacksmithing camps in the area. Chaloklowa Indian Tribe

Chaloklowa, Indian people of the Chickasaw Nation from the Land of the Dancing Turkey also has a tribe in the area. The tribe is operated and lead by Vernon Tanner of the Johnsonville Community.

Chalaklowa means “dancing turkey” in reference to the ritualized mating dances of the wild turkey. The tribe, officially known as the Chaloklowa Indian People is governed by Mingoes (chiefs) Vernon Tanner and Uly Joe Tanner. The group has started recreating a small village as a living history and teaching center for the public. The tribe offers many lessons and activities to preserve their heritage. For more information on the Chaloklowa Indian Tribe please contact Chief Vernon Tanner at vmtbear@aol.com.
